Six Mitchells Plain based cops were left seriously injured after they drove into each other.
The collision occurred early Tuesday morning after what sources say was the end of a long car chase after skelms.
Residents of Lentegeur were woken by a loud bang when the two SAPS vehicles crashed into each other on the corner of AZ Berman and Morgenster roads.
A resident on the scene said the two SAPS vehicles were badly damaged.
“One of the vehicles laid on its roof and was smashed up like a crushed tin,” the resident said.
“It was a gory sight to see, the officers looked badly injured and the impact of the vehicles shows it was a heavy collision.”
Another resident said the crash happened at around 5am and left the police bakkie and a sedan mangled.
“We heard a loud bang before 5am and woke up to find these wrecks,” she says.
“We heard they chased a getaway car, but ended up in a collision with each other. There were no other vehicles on the scene.”
Police spokesperson Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana confirmed the collision, but did not respond to queries about what led up to it, or whether the officers were indeed chasing after skelms when the accident occurred.
“The members belong to Lentegeur SAPS and POPS. An accident occurred in the early hours of this morning, six SAPS members were injured, the circumstances are under investigation,” she says.
