Authorities are investigating after three
Golden Arrow buses were set alight on Friday, saying the motive behind the fires remains a mystery.
Just after 6pm on
Friday, buses were burning in Luzuko, Gugulethu, and Philippi.
There were no
passengers on board and no injuries were reported.
It is not clear whether the arson attacks can be linked to a taxi protest on Friday, where scores of drivers once again blocked main roads
leading out of the city, causing major traffic jams.
Golden Arrow Bus
Services spokesperson, Bronwen Dyke-Beyer, confirmed the incidents.
“Golden Arrow can
confirm three of our buses were set alight in Philippi, Luzuko and Gugulethu.
“Two of our buses were completely gutted. At this stage the motive is unknown.
“We condemn these acts in the strongest
possible terms,” Dyke-Beyer says.
“We would also like to encourage anyone with information to please come forward and urge authorities to act decisively to stop these brazen attacks on our vital public transport service.”
The City’s Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson, Jermaine Carelse, confirmed firefighters were on the scene.
“The fire was extinguished at 18:57. No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is unknown,” Carelse said.
On Wednesday night, a bus driver had to flee for his life after protesters petrol-bombed the vehicle close to the Borcherd’s Quarry turn-off on the N2.
