Two taxi owners have become the latest victims in the ongoing taxi violence.
They were killed just 48 hours after another owner, Mhlangenqaba Mbolombo was gunned down in front of his home on Wednesday.
On Friday around 4.30pm the two men were killed while driving in a Toyota Etios in 6th Avenue, Nyanga.
They drove into popular meat stalls known as Ezigusheni near the Nyanga Terminus.
Hawker Nobulali Tontsi tells the Daily Voice she just heard a lot of gunshots and ran for cover.
“Before I went to hide, I heard gunshots and the car with the victims drove for a few metres before coming to a stop.
“It drove into a stall and I guess at that time the driver had already passed on.”
She says this is not the first time this has happened.
“Last year something similar happened, this is not something you get used to. Every time it happens it’s like a new thing.”
The deceased’s family didn’t want to speak, but confirmed both victims were taxi owners.
Western Cape Minister of Transport and Public Works Bonginkosi Madikizela says: “I strongly condemn the killing of three taxi operators over the last few days.
“There should be no room for criminality or criminals in the taxi industry.
“The leadership must renounce the acts of intimidation, extortion, violence and murder that are being perpetrated by criminal elements within the ranks of the industry.
“A dedicated team of detectives has been established to investigate taxi-related crimes.”
Police spokesperson Colonel André Traut confirms two men, aged 52 and 40, were shot and killed by unknown gunmen who are yet to be arrested.
