Controversial businessman Nafiz Modack has hit back at the Hawks after one of his employees appeared in court last week for allegedly intimidating a police officer.
Petrus Visser, 30, handed himself over to the Hawks last week after a warrant of arrest was issued for him.
It is alleged that he told a cop that there is a R1 million bounty on his head.
Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale says Visser was released on R20 000 bail at the Bellville Magistrates’ Court on Friday.
“Visser, a security manager to Nafiz Modack, handed himself over to the Hawks offices accompanied by his attorney.” Mogale says.
“Police frequented his residence in Parow with negative results since the warrant was issued two weeks ago.
“It is alleged that in January this year, a police captain received a telephone call, threatening him by indicating that R1 million has been paid for his assassination.”
Mogale says a case of intimidation was opened and an investigation led the Hawks to Visser's workplace and residence.
Modack claims Visser was arrested after he laid charges against the Hawks officers whom he alleges tried to extort R750 000 from him.
Last week Modack claimed a Hawks officer said, for R250 000, they would ensure alleged Sexy Boys gang boss Jerome “Donkie” Booysen was sent to jail.
For a further R500 000, the release of Zane Kilian, an accused in top cop Charl Kinnear’s murder case, could be arranged.
Modack released CCTV footage showing his gardener being assaulted by cops of the SAPS Task Force in the presence of the Hawks.
“Petrus is a handyman who washes cars. He weighs 45kg and is not a security manager.
“They only made charges against the handyman because cases were opened against them.
“All the charges are being dealt with and Ipid (Independent Police Investigative Directorate) has met with my lawyers about the assault case.
“The corruption unit is also busy with this case. I don’t know what police captain they are referring to or these alleged calls.
“I don’t know them, but the law will take its course.
“I employ professional security companies to do my security. They should get their facts right and stop sensationalising things to suit the narrative.
The case was postponed to 7 April.
