Police have identified suspects believed to be behind a bloodbath that claimed 12 people in Khayelitsha over the weekend.
The victims were gunned down in different areas after an alleged extortionist was shot and killed.
Six others have been seriously injured and are in hospital.
The victims range in age from 26 to 59-years-old.
Cops say they have identified several suspects responsible for the massacre and are busy tracing them.
Western Cape Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Thembisile Patekile, has revealed that police have made progress in identifying the shooters.
“We have moved from unknown suspects to known persons of interest. The investigation will reveal what the motive is, but tentatively we’re looking at extortion,” he said.
An innocent victim, Asemahle Mayekiso, 26, was knocking on the door at his house when unknown men shot him in the head on Saturday afternoon.
But the killing spree had started around 10am that morning when a man was shot in Banzi Street in RR Section.
He is alleged to have extorted money from a Somali-owned shop just minutes before.
Police say he had a “substantial” amount of money on him.
Four hours after the man’s death, Site B Khayelitsha was declared a no-go zone.
Residents say about 12 men went on the rampage, shooting every man they saw on the road and Asemahle happened to be outside his home.
His aunt, who does not want to be named, says: “He had just come from the post office when he was shot by the door.
“My daughter was just about to open when she heard the gunshots.
“The unknown men shot him in the head and he died on the spot.
“This is shocking to us because he was not involved in any kind of crime, he never even carried a knife.”
After shooting Asemahle, the killers went to Banzi Street and shot at Somali nationals.
SAPS’ Novela Potelwa says: “The body of the first victim was found in Banzi Street, Site B.
“In the RR Section, three other males were shot dead, two Somali nationals were shot at in T110.
“Meanwhile at a spaza shop in Y-Block, two other men were killed after being shot.
“Reports also indicate two other Somali nationals were shot close to a spaza shop and two more died in hospital.”
