Residents in Redberry and Prunus streets, part of what is known as the Backstreets of Bontas, say they immediately fell to the ground for protection as several shots went off.
Witnesses say Nutrodien ‘Nuts’ Davids, from Saffraan Street, was walking in front of Rosewood Primary when two men approached him and opened fire on him.
He was shot twice in one leg and five times in the head.
This happened at 1.20pm, less than 30 minutes before the primary school came out.
A 28-year-old mother, who lives opposite Rosewood Primary, says she just hit the floor with her four-year-old son and begged her brother to remain inside.
“The shots went on for a while and when it stopped we heard a guy crying and screaming outside. Nuts was dead and his friend was crying over his body on the corner by Prunus Street,” said the shaken mother.
Shocked parents coming to fetch their kids from school said they were afraid the body under the sheet was one of their children.
“We are not safe anymore. The children can’t even go to school,” said a resident.
Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said Nutrodien was declared dead on the scene.
“It is alleged that two unidentified males approached the victim and fired multiple shots at him, fatally wounding him,” said Van Wyk.
No arrests have been made.
