The man accused of killing a six-year-old girl and her nanny in a hit and run accident is negotiating a possible plea agreement with the State.
Mogamat Rafiek Hayners, 24, of Hanover Park made a brief appearance at the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court on Friday where he is facing a charge of culpable homicide.
Hayners is currently out on R5000 bail.
His legal team and the State informed the court that a plea negotiation was on the table.
Discussions will take place and Hayners is expected back in court on 17 May.
The courtroom was packed with little Shaylynn Arende’s family and those of her nanny, Maureen Abrahams.
IN GRIEF: Girl’s parents Sharnell Arendse and Jason Hendricks
Shaylynn’s ouma, Brenda Tommy, says they are not happy with the new developments.
“The family does not want a negotiation, lives were taken,” says Brenda.
“She cannot be replaced. We want the case to go to the highest court.
“We want justice to be served.”
Meanwhile, the court noted that crime scene photographs, chain statements, the ambulance report and the post-mortem and the accident report were complete and had been received.
KILLED: Little Shaylyn Arendse (6)
Hayners is believed to have been the driver of a white VW Golf that was driving down Strandfontein Road towards 5th Avenue in Lotus River on 27 September 2018 and allegedly mowed down Shaylynn and Maureen while they stood on the pavement.
Hayners handed himself over to police days after the incident and cops found the vehicle abandoned at one of his relatives’ homes in Hanover Park.
VICTIM: Maureen Abrahams, the nanny
While out on bail, Hayners was arrested by the Hawks at a storage facility in Somerset West in November 2018 where he was found in possession of drugs like tik and mandrax valued at R8.9 million.
Following Hayners’ arrest at the storage facility, cops arrested Russel Stanton Jonathan, 53, Mark Overmeyer, 51, and Zaynisa Alfoz, 45, for their alleged involvement, and they were all granted R50 000 bail at the Somerset West Magistrates’ Court.
