The man accused of ramming his car into a six-year-old girl and her nanny while they stood on the pavement will have to wait a while longer before he hears his fate.
Mogamat Rafiek Hayners, 24, of Hanover Park made a brief appearance at the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court on Friday where he is facing a charge of culpable homicide.
Hayners is currently out on R5 000 bail in this matter.
In April Hayners’s legal team and the State informed the court that a plea negotiation was on the table.
Last month the matter was moved to the Wynberg Regional Court.
In a surprise move on Friday, the State moved the matter back to the Wynberg Magistrate's Court for further investigation and the case was postponed to 6 August.
ACCUSED: The driver Mogamat Rafiek Hayners
Hayners was allegedly behind the wheel of a white VW Golf that came speeding down Strandfontein Road towards 5th Avenue in Lotus River on 27 September 2018, that struck little Shaylynn Arendse and her nanny Maureen Abrahams as they stood on the pavement.
Hayners handed himself over to police several days after the incident, after cops found the Golf standing at the house of a relative in Hanover Park.
KILLED: Maureen Abrahams
While out on bail, in November 2018, Hayners was caught by the Hawks at a storage facility in Somerset West where he was allegedly found in possession of drugs like tik and mandrax valued at R8.9 million.
Following Hayners’ arrest at the storage facility, cops also arrested Russel Stanton Jonathan, 53, Mark Overmeyer, 51, and Zaynisa Alfoz, 45, for their alleged involvement in a drug smuggling syndicate.
They were granted R50 000 bail at the Somerset West Magistrate's Court.
