A man who has had both legs amputated received a house this week - and thanks to Daily Voice readers, his home has been filled with furniture and food.
On Wednesday, the Daily Voice brought you the heart-wrenching story of Victor Banjatwa, 66, of Gugulethu, who is wheelchair-bound.
Victor lost his right leg to diabetes in 2011.
Three years later, he was back in hospital after rats gnawed the toes of his left foot and the wounds turned septic.
Doctors were once again forced to amputate.
For 12 years, Victor had shared a hokkie with his wife Ntombokwenzani, 59, in Gugulethu, where he paid rental of R350.
Before that he had been removed from the “Hostels” where he had lived for 20 years.
The couple have one daughter who does not live with them.
Victor, who worked as a security guard at a doctor’s surgery in Lansdowne, was forced to give up his job when doctors amputated his first leg.
After City officials including the Mayor’s Area Central representative, Councillor Siyabulela Mamkeli, heard of his story, Victor and his family were selected to receive a two-bedroom RDP house.
Victor and his wife moved into their new home in Manenberg on Tuesday but had no furniture, only an old couch which they slept on and bags of clothing.
On Thursday, a truck load of furniture, food and clothing were donated to the couple, including two double beds, clothing, food, cupboards, pillows and bedding.
Councillor, Mamkeli says they are grateful: “I took vinyl flooring to the house, a double bed and a second one is going to be delivered.
“There is also a sleeper couch which folds. Crockery, cupboards, bedding, a headboard, pillows and food.
“We need to acknowledge all those who contributed and we know many do not want to be named.
“We must say thank you to Shireen from the Northern Suburbs who donated brand-new furniture.”
Victor says he is overjoyed.
“I am feeling so happy,” he says. “They gave us a bed, even cushions and chairs.
“We want to thank everyone.”
