The body of a newborn baby with its umbilical cord still attached was found dumped in the vlei just off Jakes Gerwel Drive in Langa on Sunday morning by passersby.
The vlei is an area where refuse water runs behind the shacks just opposite Jakkalsvlei Avenue in Bonteheuwel.
Just after 7am a resident found the baby lying uncovered and naked behind a hokkie.
The baby was confirmed dead at the scene.
Ward councillor Angus McKenzie said: “An appeal goes out to help find this mother and we as a community need to help our people and help carry each other’s burdens.”
Police spokesperson, Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana, says the matter is being investigated.
“Langa police are investigating an inquest case after a body of a baby was found on Sunday just before 7am.”
