Grassy Park cops are on the hunt for a syndicate they believe are targeting e-hailing taxi services, using a woman to book rides so they can rob and hijack drivers.
Station Commander, Colonel Dawood Laing, says in recent weeks there have been a spate of robberies and hijackings of drivers in the vicinity of Perth Road between First and Seventh avenues.
“From what the drivers have reported the woman books the trip and when the driver arrives he is held at gunpoint by two men who rob them of cellphones and cash and in some cases they take the vehicle,” says Laing.
“Over the weekend another driver was hijacked and the Hyundai Accent was found abandoned in Retreat.
SYNDICATE CLAMP DOWN: Col. Laing
“The drivers have not reported being injured but we are calling on them to be cautious about accepting trips in these areas. So far most of the incidents are at night.”
He says the skelms are locals in the area and called on residents to piemp them.
“They are aged roughly between 20 and 40-years-old and we are calling on the community to come forward with information about who they are.
“This affects the entire community as drivers will not want to do trips in this area any more as drivers are coming under attack.”
Anyone with information is asked to call Col. Laing on 082 469 3036 or Captain Ashley Petersen on 079 894 1213.
