A female dog was stabbed in the face while trying to protect her puppies from an intruder.
The Animal Welfare Society of South Africa in Philippi says their staff were called out to the Lansdowne SAPS this week to see to a two-year-old dog, named Blackie.
The dog gave birth to a litter of seven puppies and had to undergo surgery to repair the damage from her ear to her mouth.
Allan Perrins, from the AWS, says information is sketchy but believe Blackie was stabbed during a domestic altercation.
“It appears as though the dog was stabbed during a domestic altercation at the owner’s Flamingo Crescent residence in Lansdowne.
“We have been told that the assailant entered the yard of the property and was confronted by a small pack of barking dogs, including Blackie, who he allegedly stabbed in the face.
“Since being admitted, Blackie has undergone surgery to repair a huge gash to her left cheek. The gash extended from the base of her ear to the corner of her mouth.”
He says they have noticed Blackie is very protective of her puppies, making it likely that she was attacked while protecting them.
“We seriously doubt she would have left them vulnerable and defenceless to harm or injury. It is very likely she was either provoked or threatened by someone with evil intent.”
