A 20-year-old man from Manenberg landed in trouble after he was caught during a gang fight.
Manenberg SAPS commander Brigadier Enolium Joseph says Riyaaz Cupido of the Fancy Boys gang ran vas into cops on Friday.
“Members of the Hard Livings and Fancy Boys gangs were spotted by residents running with guns in Kei Street and they contacted police,” he explains.
“Officers were in close proximity and responded swiftly chasing after the group of men.
“The suspect was spotted with the firearm and one of the vans chased him while another van came from a different direction and he ran vas into police.”
Joseph says officers ordered the skollie to drop the firearm and he was arrested for the possession of a 9mm pistol and a magazine with 14 live rounds.
Cupido made his first appearance in the Athlone Magistrate's Court on Monday.
Joseph says the pro-activeness of the community helped avert a possible gang fight.
“Nobody was injured as the residents reported it immediately,” he says.
“This helped us prevent a possible gang fight and possible injuries.
“We applaud the cooperation of the community and the swift action by police to curb gang violence in the Manenberg precinct.
“With the mass prayers hosted by Moulana Sameeg Norodien and Sheikh Salieg Isaacs each week, we have helped to reduce gang activity and mobilising residents to start reporting the skollies.”
