Five thousand people were fed in different communities across the Cape Flats thanks to an organisation which cooked 18 hundred litres of food.
Upcountry Feeding Hands has fed over 18 000 people since the start of lockdown.
And on Monday, they fed 5000 people after cooking 18 100-litre pots of akhni and breyani.
The foods were distributed in Manenberg, Strandfontein, Parkwood, Lavender Hill, Lotus River and Lost City.
Iegshaan van der Schyff started their initiative a year back and says: “We began on 16 June, we first did distributions in areas like Oudtshoorn.
“We would distribute food two to three times a week. We asked small businesses for assistance.”

But when the lockdown set in, the organisation started feeding people closer to home.
On Sunday night with the help of various donors and small businesses, they cooked 18 pots of food.
“Two pots went to areas like Grassy Park, Lavender Hill, Ottery Flats, New Horizon, Retreat, Lost City, Manenberg and Parkwood and so on,” says Iegshaan.
“I am the cook also, so I see that the meals are prepared on a large scale.”
Redaa Ameeroedien, of the Schaapkraal Community Forum, joined hands with Iegshaan.
Redaa, together with Strandfontein Community Policing Forum and various organisations, have been distributing bread since the start of lockdown.
“We assisted with the distribution of the foods so it could be centralised and not one area receiving too much,” he explains.
“We distribute about 200 loaves of bread a day. We are all connected on a database.”
