The City’s Fire and Rescue teams were called out to Muizenberg High School on Thursday after a report of a gas leak which left 23 people with breathing problems.
Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson, Jermaine Carelse, says it is suspected that chemicals used to clean blocked drains have caused a vapour cloud which spread around the school.
Twenty-three pupils and teachers were treated for respiratory distress.
He says they responded at 11am after reports of a gas leak.

“Information we have at the moment indicates liquid chlorine was thrown into a blocked drain inside the male ablution facility.
“This resulted in a vapour cloud forming which spread through the corridors of the school.
“Approximately twenty-three persons were affected and treated for respiratory distress.
