A pit bull has died a hero’s death while protecting his owner during a violent fallout with a relative in Manenberg.
In the ruckus, both the dog and his owner were stabbed.
Senior Inspector Mark Levendal of the Animal Welfare Society of South Africa in Philippi responded to a call in Manenberg last Friday, where a man and his dog had been wounded.
The dog, a black and white medium-sized pit bull terrier, had been stabbed several times and was admitted without a name.

The hond was immediately stabilised and a drip was administered, says AWS spokesman Allan Perrins.
He says their centre received a frantic phone call that the dog had been stabbed during a fight between its owner and a male relative.
Unfortunately vets could not save the brave pooch and he was euthanised on the instruction of his hartseer owner.
Perrins says the bloody knife used to stab the two was also retrieved and the wounded man was admitted to hospital.
The victim did not open a case with the police.
“The owner requested euthanasia,” explains Allan.
“The victim doesn’t want to press charges.
“It’s amazing how loyal the dog was.”
Levendal explains he managed to stabilise the frightened and wounded animal who had jumped between the two fighting men in an attempt to protect his owner.
“On arrival at the scene, the caller directed me to where the dog was and it was clear that it had multiple stab wounds to the body and was bleeding profusely,” he says.
“Without hesitation I loaded the injured dog into my vehicle and hastily proceeded to awaiting hospital staff.
“The dog was stabilised and we immediately administered a drip.
“According to the caller, there was an altercation between two relatives.
“The dog, a male pit bull terrier, lunged at the attacker in an effort to protect his owner and was viciously stabbed in the process.
“I am not able to elaborate on the condition of the gentleman who was stabbed as he was already taken to hospital by the time I arrived at the scene.”
