The Coronavirus pandemic has claimed the life of a well-known Cape Town businessman and community worker and his wife.
Omar Majiet, 70, the chairman of the
Belgravia Islamic Society, passed away on Friday, four days after his wife Maryam.
The couple had both tested positive for Covid-19.
Their heartbroken daughter Tasneem is currently in isolation, reports VOC News.
Friends and family have described Majiet as a hard-working, generous and selfless person and Tasneem said her dad spent most of his days at the masjid and was
actively involved in community projects.
“He was a very caring, kind and compassionate person. He always went the extra mile for his siblings and his children,” she was quoted as saying.
Majiet started out as a fruit and vegetable vendor, which grew into a full-fledged food trading business at sporting events, which is now run by his children.
Messages of condolences have streamed in from organisations Majiet had worked with over the years.
The Belgravia Islamic Society said in a statement: “He was father to us all, a man whose entire life revolved around the house of Allah. He selflessly sacrificed his time for the upkeep of our masjid. There is yet to be a man to fill the huge role Boeta Omar played in our community.”
Majiet was also the former chairman of Baltic Rangers FC and the general manager of Santos FC for many years.
Santos Football Club - The People’s Team posted on it’s Facebook page: “Mr Majiet was an influential member of Santos Football club during the late 90s and early 2000s. We wish the the Majiet family strength in this time of loss so soon after the passing of Mrs Maryam Majiet.”
