Alan Winde has been elected the new Western Cape premier through a secret ballot during the swearing-in of the provincial Parliament members at the provincial Legislature on Wednesday.
Winde went up against the African National Congress (ANC) leader in the Western Cape legislature Cameron Dugmore who received 10 votes against Winde’s 24. There were six spoiled votes.
Following the announcement shortly after vote counting, Winde said:“ I would like to use this opportunity to thank my party [Democratic Alliance] for the trust and nomination. I would like to also thank the voters of this province for the trust in us, and when I say us, I talk to all of us that were elected here today because this parliament has a role to play, whether you were elected as government or elected as the opposition.
“And with that, I would also like to say to every member elected here today at the start of the 6th parliament, congratulations, I wish you well and that together we make sure that we will improve the lives of every single person in this province,” he said.
Winde will be taking over the role from Helen Zille.
