In less than 24 hours, Law Enforcement officers made a second arrest involving a horse and cart trying to sell Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) items at the scrapyard.
At about 2pm on Wednesday, Metal Theft and Rail Enforcement units were called out to Bofors Circle in Epping after two males tried to sell railway tracks at the scrapyard.
Officers arrested the duo and impounded the horse, named Thunder.
Law Enforcement’s Wayne Dyason says this is the second day suspects were arrested using a horse and cart to transport stolen goods.
“Two unknown males were at a scrap metal dealer in Bofors Circle in Epping,” he says.
“The [suspects] were attempting to sell railway tracks and rail shoes at the scrap dealer.
[Officers] immediately responded and upon arrival, they apprehended the suspects that were in possession of property belonging to Prasa.
“The suspects had, in a similar fashion to another metal theft case on Tuesday, transported the items using a horse and cart.”

The estimated value of the goods recovered is yet to be determined.
“The suspects were arrested and charged for being in possession of stolen property and alternatively charged under the Criminal Matters Amendment Act. Thunder was impounded by the Cart Horse Association,” Dyason said.
In an unrelated incident, officers of the same unit were patrolling in Acre Road, Factretron, area when they observed three skelms cutting City of Cape Town cables.
“Officers observed three suspects, a female and two males, cutting through a 11 000 kilovolt electricity cable belonging to the City of Cape Town,” explains Dyason.
“They quickly pounced on the suspects and arrested all three. They were charged in terms of the Criminal Matters Amendment Act.”
