The murder trial of a young mom from Montevideo, who was allegedly shot and killed by her ex-berk, has been put on hold at the Western Cape High Court as the case is not ready yet.
Wayne Lawrence returned to the court yesterday where he is set to be tried for the murder of Abigail Marinus, 36, but the matter was postponed to 6 August.
The 36-year-old mom was killed outside her home in Nevada Street in December 2017 when she was allegedly shot by Lawrence.
Abigail was struck in her head and neck and one of the bullets ricocheted off her and hit the couple’s 16-year-old daughter in the foot.
The shooter fled the scene but two days later, Lawrence handed himself over to police.
National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila says Lawrence is accused of premeditated murder, attempted murder and breach of a protection order.
“It was supposed to be the start of the trial but it had to be postponed to 6 August for a pre-trial conference,” he says.
“This is a 2017 femicide case. Lawrence is charged with the murder of his partner from who he was separated. He abused her physically and emotionally.
“He stalked her and waited for her at her mother’s house and shot her in the head and body at close range as she was parking her vehicle.
“Their daughter was in the vehicle at the time of the shooting. She was injured. He is charged with premeditated murder, attempted murder and breach of a protection order.”
