The Cape of Good Hope SPCA plans to lay criminal charges against a motorist who was caught on camera driving over two baby Egyptian Geese.
The incident which was filmed by Western Cape Education Department spokesperson, Jessica Shelver, went viral on social media after she posted pictures and a video on Friday morning.
According to Shelver, the incident happened in the Cape Town CBD where two adult Egyptian geese and six goslings were crossing the road.
She wrote: “I just saw this heartless inhumane person kill two ducklings purposefully on the corner of Spin Street and Adderley Street - I say purposefully because we tried to stop him from driving off at the traffic light and he saw them and just drove over them! What a disgusting human!!!”
She also posted a picture showing the geese before the incident and the two dead goslings afterwards.
Her post was shared more than 3 000 times with users slamming the driver as “heartless”, “a bastard” and a “piece of s***”.
SPCA spokesperson, Belinda Abrahams, says they tried to retrieve the remains for post-mortem purposes but it had already been disposed of.
Crushed geese
She says they have found the owner of the vehicle.
“Whether the owner was driving the car at the time will have to be investigated. Once we have completed our investigation we will go to Cape Town Central Police Station and lay charges under the Animal Protection Act.”
