The family of the mother accused of killing her eight-month-old baby are shocked that she appeared in court without them being informed.
Catherine and Ricardo Isaacs appeared at Bishop Lavis Magistrates’ Court on Monday morning, says National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila.
“They are charged with the murder of their baby. Their case has been postponed to December 9 for bail application,” he said.
The parents were arrested on 13 November after their son Leviathan died after being beaten.
Since the Bonteheuwel mom’s arrest, her family has been trying to get her out and were frustrated that she missed her son’s funeral when the case was postponed.
Catherine’s sister Leanne Michaels, 41, says: “I am really concerned that the first time I hear that my sister appeared in court is from the Daily Voice. We had been trying to find ways of her getting a date so she can come out because she is innocent in all of this.”
She insists that her sister would never harm her own child.
“Catherine is innocent in all of this, she was at work when the incident happened. Her four-year-old child says the father was trying to get the child to sleep by hitting him and after realising he was injured, he took him to hospital.
“My sister was then called to the hospital where she was informed minutes later the child was brain dead and would be on a life support machine.
“On the day the machine was switched off, she was arrested even though she was not present during the beating.”
