A pair of black shoes chosen by little six-year-old Shaylynn Arendse for her birthday party was placed on top of her coffin at her funeral service.
Hundreds of family, friends, school mates and staff from Strandfontein Primary school came to St Phillips Catholic Church in Strandfontein on Saturday to say goodbye to the six-year-old who was loved by all.
For her final journey, Shaylynn had on a white flowergirl dress.
A photograph of a smiling Shaylynn was placed on top of her tiny pink and white coffin and her brand-new baby doll skoentjies next to it.
Shaylynn would have celebrated her seventh birthday on 3 October and a birthday party at the GrandWest ice rink had been planned for Saturday.
HEARTBREAK: Shaylynn’s funeral in Strandfontein
But instead of having fun with her friends, her family held her funeral and Shaylynn was cremated.
Her ouma Brenda Tommy says they now are calling on the community to support the family at the next court date of the man who allegedly killed Shaylynn.
Shaylynn had been standing on the pavement with her nanny, Maureen Abrahams, 67, at the intersection of 5th Avenue and Strandfontein Road in Lotus River on 27 September and were on their way to the Pick * Pay store when tragedy struck.
The driver of a VW Golf allegedly jumped a red robot and lost control of the vehicle Shaylynn and Maureen were struck by.
Shaylynn died at the scene while Maureen died in hospital.
The driver, Moegamat Rafiek Hayners, 24, made his first appearance at the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court last week and was released out on R5000 bail.
He is expected back in court on 12 December.
