More than 200 children from Heideveld were treated to a day of fun and games on Monday, when Women4Change hosted a sports day for them.
The kids also received meals and party packs.
The Heideveld Sports Grounds was alive with the sound of laughter as children played games.
Shanaaz Williams and her husband, Tohier, were both part of the programme.
Shanaaz says Women4Change strives to improve the lives of the community at large and they hope to keep the children off the streets by hosting these kinds of events regularly.
“We are people from the community who want to help our children to reach their full potential.
“We don’t have any money and depend entirely on the goodwill of local businesses to assist us to make the food that we prepare ourselves, and also provide the children with drinks and party packs.
“Our children are in need of care and doing just this can help them make better decisions and reach for their dreams as well,” Shanaaz says.
They also had a dance competition with moves taught by “Shakierah from Upper Constantia”, and singing by local artist Wishaal Adams.
The children chowed on sandwiches, juice and akni, and received party packs, all sponsored by Elite Cash n Carry and Chain Superette in Gatesville.
Little Sadeeq Peters, 10, said he had a lot of fun: “I liked to run and [enjoyed] the food. I did not feel afraid playing outside.”
