Tempers flared at Bellville Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday where it was revealed that an alleged drunk driver accused of killing council worker Alexander van Wyk, 25, has fled.
Angry Hanover Park aunties hurled abuse as they demanded justice for the young man who died after being hit by a car driven by Andrew Choruma, 35, while he was sweeping the streets of Parow.
His mom Alverina, 48, says the family was devastated when they learnt shortly after the accident that Choruma appeared in court and was granted R1000 bail.
“The detective didn’t even tell us he got bail,” she fumes.
“We did a petition to ask that his bail be denied but it is too late because nobody told us, so today we are here to demand justice and answers.”
But the irate crowd was dealt another blow when state prosecutor, Matrose Tobinceba, informed the court that Choruma had failed to arrive at court.
RUN OVER: Alexander
Legal Aid lawyer, Nondumiso Mkonto, confirmed she did not know where her client was.
A warrant for his arrest was issued and the case postponed to 30 January.
“This is their fault! They let a killer loose by giving him bail and now they will never catch him,” said Alverina.
“The detective told us that he was arrested for drunk driving before.
“So this is the second time and this time he killed my son.
“This has ripped our family apart and ripped a father from his family.
“We are not leaving it like this and will be lodging a complaint with Community Safety minister, Albert Fritz, to ask for his help with this case.”
