An angry Hanover Park community is expected to protest at court today where two cops who were arrested for the killing of a security officer will be appearing.
The Daily Voice has learnt that the police reservists were busted on Friday following an Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) probe into the shooting.
The two officers, who are said to be from Hanover Park, are due to appear at Athlone Magistrates’ Court.
On 5 December, armed response officer Marlon Fuller, 38, had gone out to tell his two daughters, who were having a jol near their home, that it was late and they needed to go inside.
The teens were at the playground at Cascade Court at about midnight just a few metres from their home.
At that moment, cops arrived at the scene.
Officers ordered residents to lie on the ground and it’s not clear what led to shots being fired.
Following news of the arrests, Marlon’s wife Sharon said: “I am relieved that there is progress with the case.
“My husband was innocent and did not deserve to die like that. I will be in court with all my kids with placards to demand that the cops not be granted bail.”
Marlon’s daughter Tameeka said the officers assaulted her when she picked up the bullet casings.
The Daily Voice was also reliably informed that the cop who allegedly shot Marlon was not meant to be carrying the gun he used.
The killing has sparked outrage in the community, who will make their voices heard at court on Monday.
Hanover Park CPF spokesperson Kashiefa Mohammed says: “We will be standing up against police brutality and gender-based violence. Marlon’s daughter was abused by the police too during the incident.”
Kashiefa also confirmed the arrested cops are reservist: “Yes, both of them are police reservists, but we cannot name them as their families are from Hanover Park and we fear for their safety.
Ipid confirms the arrests: “Two police suspects [were] arrested by our investigators today for the death of an adult male in Hanover Park last week.”
They are expected to appear before a magistrate court shortly.
“Further comments will be made once our investigators had engaged National Prosecution Authority (NPA).”
