Your generosity can help the Dental Wellness Foundation to not only fulfil its mandate of oral health wellness for kids in Khayelitsha and Mfuleni, but to fill empty tummies too.
The foundation needs supplies to keep running its soup kitchens in these areas.
The soup kitchen programme has recently been added to the Foundation’s bucket of hope after the national lockdown hit hard and left the Toothbrush Mamas, who ran oral health programmes in primary schools, stretching their hearts to continue caring for their beneficiaries.
One of the nine mamas is Bukiwe Nxusani who runs a soup kitchen from her four-roomed shack at BM section in Khayelitsha.
She says: “We used to focus on dental health but the need for help went beyond that, families lost income and children could no longer get food from the schools.
“We could not fold our arms so we came up with the idea of adding a soup, and children loved it.
“We started with two meals a day last year and we cut it to one after the schools reopened.
“However, with the current situation we realised the need to continue providing breakfast.
“These children pop by early asking for food and it is sad when you have nothing to offer because you’re saving for the main meal later in the day.”
She says they would appreciate donations of breakfast ingredients and kids clothes: “These children’s families struggle, they really need help.”
Karen Tollman, the co-chairperson for DWF South Africa, says: “The women are amazing, they have become leaders of their own communities.”
She says a child’s hygiene is as important as healthy nutrition, which is why they combined the programmes.
