So the kids return to school on Tuesday and I’m sure many a parent is breathing a sigh of relief.
It’s not that we don’t love our kids, it’s just that they can be so exhausting. And expensive. School holidays always leave me financially and emotionally broke.
I actually planned these holidays very carefully and managed to save up a bit of cash to do things with my kids.
But it’s funny how no matter how carefully you plan, it always ends up being lots more expensive in the end.
For example, I planned to finally take them to “Cool Runnings” in Bellville for the afternoon, mostly because it looked like fun, the rides are fairly cheap and of course I wanted to go also.
Well, the rides were so much fun that we ended up staying longer, which resulted in them getting hungry and me having to buy them all unbudgeted lunches.
What is it that kids are suddenly starving the moment you go out and they see food? It doesn’t matter that I fed them before we left home, they were inexplicably dying of hunger an hour later.
Anyway, I have to keep reminding myself that it’s just money. And these things are much more important because they are about the moments and the memories that my kids are taking with them in adulthood.
I just wish there weren’t so many holidays. Enjoy back to school, parents.
