A 28-year-old woman was allegedly shot and killed by her ex-boyfriend when she refused to marry him.
Nokuthula Thashe from Suburban, Delft, was doing the laundry on Friday evening when her Zimbabwean boyfriend came with a friend holding R13 000 for lobola.
She refused to marry him, as she had done numerous times during the five years they’d been dating.
Nokuthula was gunned down at her mom’s home days after she ran away from the house that she and her berk shared at the N2 Gateway in Langa.
Her mother Sheila Thashe, 48, says the couple had a volatile relationship.
She believes the boyfriend was jealous and had been abusing her daughter.
In April, Nokuthula laid charges of assault against him.
Last Wednesday, while everyone was out voting, Nokuthula slept over at her mother’s house in Delft, only telling her mother they’d had a fight and she needed a place to stay.
“She asked me to give her a R50 so that she can pay for the transport to get all her things from N2 Gateway,” says Sheila.
“I gave it to her and she and a friend went to go and get it. When her things arrived, they smelled of petrol. He had thrown her stuff out of the flat. I gave her black bags to pack them into and she started doing the washing
“I did not know it would be our last conversation,” says Sheila, the tears streaming down her face.
On Friday night, she was awoken by her daughter screaming her name and two shots being fired.
“I ran and she was lying on the stoep, barely breathing. There was almost no blood at all. She just lay there moaning as I called for someone to phone the police and an ambulance,” says Sheila.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Andrè Traut confirmed Nokuthula’s killing, as well as the assault case laid in April.
Cops are still hunting for the suspect.
“On Friday, Delft SAPS members responded to a complaint of a shooting which had occurred at 45 Ouhout Street, Delft South,” says Traut.
“Upon arrival, the members found the body of a 28-year-old female who was shot and killed, allegedly by her boyfriend, who is a foreign national and who fled the scene.
“He is yet to be arrested.”
