A 71-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the murder of his own wife.
Frances Carter, 66, was stabbed in the kitchen of their Marina da Gama home by “two attackers” on 17 October.
But in a shocking twist, William Carter was taken into custody outside hospital just after he had been discharged on Monday morning.
He had been receiving treatment for a gunshot wound.
It is alleged that he stabbed his wife to death then shot himself in the stomach.
The incident took place at the couple’s home in Muizenberg around 3am.
Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said: “Muizenberg police arrested a 71-year-old man [yesterday] morning on a charge of murder.
“The suspect was arrested at a medical facility at the time of his discharge at 9.30am and he is due to make a court appearance once he has been charged for murder.
“In addition to the murder charge, firearm-related charges are also under investigation against him.”
Speaking from his hospital bed, William told Weekend Argus that they had been attacked by two men in their home in the quiet, waterside suburb near Muizenberg.
Frances was stabbed in the head and back and was declared dead on arrival at hospital, while William was found lying wounded outside their house.
“I’m in quite a bit of pain from the bullet in my stomach, from what I understand it went right through me,” he said.
“I did not know about my wife, and I was only told when I was in the hospital what happened to her. It was quite a shock.
“I don’t remember much. It is all a blur. I do remember being shot; there was a scuffle for the gun.
“There were two people in the house, but non-descriptive.”
Frank Bokhorst of the Muizenberg Community Policing Forum says he cannot comment much on the case.
“All we know is that there is murder and attempted murder case. It is a high profile case and the police are expected to make an arrest soon.”
William will appear in court later this week.
