A well-known Ballroom and Latin dancer has been killed in a hit and run tragedy.
Now the family of Sidney Carelse is appealing to the public to come forward with information about his death.
Sidney, 35, was hit by two vehicles on Prince George Drive on Friday at about 11.30pm.
He lived with his father in Lavender Hill.
His brother Moegammad Shaqeel Dareis explains: “Sidney was killed on Friday night when he was knocked first by a white car, flung into the air and landed on the ground and then another bakkie drove over him and both vehicles drove away.”
Moegammad said the incident was witnessed by Sidney’s two friends who went missing shortly after the incident and reappeared on Sunday with Sidney’s cellphone and ID.
“They were drinking that night and his friend says Sidney left his stuff there because he didn’t want to walk home with valuables, but why only bring it on Sunday, two days after the incident?” asks Moegammad.
He says Sidney was preparing for a dance competition at the end of this month.
“He loved his dancing, he has been dancing for years and was excited for the upcoming competition,” he says.
Sidney was a member of Greg’s Dance Academy for nearly 20 years.
The owner of the academy, Gregory Moolman, said Sidney was the Western Province champion for a few years in a row.
His friend Octavia Fortune adds: “Sidney was a very passionate dancer, very dedicated to his craft. He had a hard time especially when he lost his parents a few years ago.
“Even that didn’t keep him off the floor. He loved teaching newcomers at our academy and he was always the life of the party at our functions.”
Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg says a case of culpable homicide was opened for investigation at Steenberg SAPS.
Moegammad says you can call 084 853 9717 with information about his death or to assist with the funeral.
