An alleged Hard Livings gang member was killed in Bokmakierie on Monday night when an unknown amount of shooters opened fire on him while he was standing outside.
According to witnesses, the victim was outside in 8th Avenue when bullets started flying.
Malick Fortuin, 30, was hit multiple times, and died. The community says the shooters fled on foot.
Scared residents say the shootings have become so frequent in the area, they prefer sleeping on the floor.
Relatives have confirmed Fortuin was a member of the Hard Livings. It’s believed he was gunned down by rival skollies.
Fortuin is a relative of 8-year-old Rimeez Caetano, who was shot two years ago while he played outside.
Speaking to the Daily Voice, the boy’s mom, Tasneem Caetano, says Malick’s death “is the limit”.
“They killed my son in front of the door. We have lost enough. How much more is my family supposed to take? Rimeez was innocent and it’s just getting to me that people in our area are dying.
“Malick was my cousin and he lived his own life. Nobody deserves this kind of death. This is getting bad in our area now,” she said sadly.
Police spokesman, Lieutenant Colonel Andrè Traut, confirms: “[Yesterday] around 20:22 a 31-year-old was shot and killed in Downing Street, Hazendal, Athlone by a suspect who is yet to be arrested. The circumstances are being investigated.”
