The man who was shot in Club Galaxy over the weekend has been identified as the cousin of a well-known Eerste River businessman who was murdered last year.
The Daily Voice can reveal that the victim, who was shot twice in the head, is Johan Brown, the cousin of 48-year-old Hampshire “Hempie” Brown.
Hempie’s son, Corne, was with Johan when they came under attack in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Hempie and his wife, Wendy, owned Hempie’s Bottle Store and Club Wendy’s in Kleinvlei and he was killed outside his store in a drive-by shooting by three men in a Toyota
Conquest in February 2018.
At the time, Wendy said Hempie died protecting her.
She said the men shot at Hempie’s car, a Chevrolet Lumia SS, but it was bulletproof and he wasn’t injured.
The shooters then came for her, and Hempie drove behind them to try and stop them, but they shot him through the windscreen and he died.
Wendy said she believes her husband was killed because they were jealous of their success.
A family member on Wednesday said they have managed to keep things afloat and that is why they are now being
targeted again.
GALAXY: Shooting inside Galaxy nightclub on Saturday.
The relative reveals that
Johan has taken over the businesses.
Johan was shot at Galaxy in Rylands while accompanying Corne, a DJ who was on the line-up at the private function.
Johan was shot twice in the head, while Corne was unharmed.
Johan survived the attack and is recovering in hospital.
Footage of the incident has been handed over to the police.
According to a witness, the gunmen were watching Johan and Corne before they struck.
“They were four at the bar watching the guy and there were two outside in the car,” said the man, who asked to remain anonymous.
“One of the DJs is the son of a man who was murdered last year and his father owned a nightclub in Eerste River.
“He came into the club with bodyguards and it made everyone very
uncomfortable.
“The guy who got shot was with his laaitie.”
A source close to the Brown family told the Daily Voice: “Corne was not the target, those people (the shooters) are
cowards. And Johan is OK, he is stable.”
The woman says they believe the shooting is related to the family’s businesses.
