The baby boy dumped by his mother in Lansdowne on Monday morning has been named after Alexander the Great and has already been blessed with a new mother.
The EMS worker who had responded to the call and had checked the baby’s vitals cannot conceive and now hopes to make Alexander her own.
The birth mother, who has yet to be found, was seen on private surveillance footage, leaving the month-old baby in front of a house in St Joseph Road.
The infant, who was alive, was found by community members and taken to
Hanover Park Day Hospital.
It is believed the woman may be from a nearby informal settlement called “Die Landjie”.
Police spokesperson,
Captain FC van Wyk, says a case of child abandonment has been opened for investigation.
Ward 60 Councillor Mark Kleinschmidt called Alexander a Christmas miracle and likened his story to that of Moses in the Bible.
“The mother may have resorted to his abandonment because of financial constraints and inability to care for him.
She ‘deposited’ him at the gate of a seemingly affluent home in an impassioned endeavour to give him a better life,” he explained.
“Paramedic, Mercia Esterhuizen, who checked his physical vitals, desires to adopt him because of her inability to conceive.
“Alexander’s story, like baby Moses in a basket, and the birth of Jesus in a stable, is a good news story to be cherished this Christmas season.”
The child is currently is being cared for at a home in Heideveld.
