An alleged hijacker was left injured after the man he was trying to hijack drove over him.
The incident happened in Athlone around 9pm on Saturday.
A witness says an armed man got out of a VW Polo on Huxley Road and walked to a stationary tow truck and allegedly tried to rob the driver.
The woman says the driver of the truck sped off and in the process hit the alleged hijacker.
The tow truck driver drove from Jan Smuts Drive over the curb to Louisvale Road and came to a halt in a yard.
“Luckily the house is not fenced, the tow truck uprooted a small tree on a pavement and a post from the house it stopped in.
“The man who the driver said pointed a gun at him was on the ground and visibly in pain from the impact.
“I am not sure if he was hit with the truck or what, but when the car came to a stop the man was left paralysed,” she explains.
“There were two occupants in the truck, they came out and shouted that he had a gun.”
The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, explains that the gun was found in a small tree at the house: “It was then discovered that it’s a gas gun.”
The woman says the incident was rather bizarre: “Who on earth would try and hijack a tow truck? Could this be a personal thing? The other two guys in the Polo left as soon as they dropped the gunman off.”
The vrou states the cops took the injured alleged hijacker away in a van.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana says there is no record of the incident at the Athlone Police Station.
