DA Western Cape leader Bonginkosi Madikizela has rubbished allegations of an assassination plot on legislature speaker Masizole Mnqasela, who is challenging him for the top party post.
Madikizela, who is also transport and public works MEC, said the allegations were a smear campaign by Mnqasela ahead of the elective congress, which is scheduled to go ahead on Saturday.
“This man failed for almost a month to prove his allegations,” Madikizela said.
Mnqasela had not responded to questions by the time of going to print.
DA federal council chairperson Helen Zille said the allegations were serious: “If they are false, someone is guilty of lying and defamation.
"If they are true, someone is guilty of an assassination plot.”
Zille is expecting to receive a report on the allegations today and will make a decision tomorrow.
