A teenager died after he and his friend were hit by a train in Retreat.
The pair were trying to cross the railway line on a bicycle yesterday afternoon.
The two, aged 13 and 16 years old, were both riding on the bike as they tried to go over White Road crossing.
Charles Dykes, 16, died while his friend was rushed to hospital with serious injuries.
His heartbroken mom Margaret Dykes, 50, says she was at work and rushed to the scene to find her son already dead.
“I understand it was an accident but I still feel sad,” she tells the Daily Voice.
ER24 spokesperson Pieter Rossouw says: “When ER24 paramedics arrived on scene they found that one of the boys sustained severe head injuries.”
“Unfortunately, there was nothing that paramedics could do for him and he was declared dead on scene.
“The other boy sustained critical injuries including various fractures and head injuries.”
Police spokesperson Constable Noloyiso Rwexana says a culpable homicide case is under investigation.
Metrorail’s Riana Scott says the incident was reported at noon. The opposite line was re-opened for normal traffic flow.
In another incident, a train driver and his assistant were seriously injured after their freight train derailed on Tuesday.
Four locomotives en route to the depot in Bellville went off the tracks adjacent to the N2 highway near Strand.
