Struggle icon George Bizos is recovering in hospital after a bad fall.
The 87-year-old was admitted to Donald Gordon Medical Centre in Parktown on Thursday after he was injured in a fall at Wits University during a lecture.
The university’s student newspaper, the Wits Vuvuzela, reported that after the fall, Bizos was bleeding from his neck and was helped to his feet by guests.
The SA National Civic Organisation (Sanco) on Sunday wished the human rights lawyer a speedy recovery.
“His principled leadership, wise legal counsel and cardinal contribution towards the reconciliation, nation-building, and social cohesion project, as well as reclaiming the values that underpinned the struggle for liberation is still needed,” Sanco national spokesman Jabu Mahlangu said.
“It could be argued that he saved the late president Nelson Mandela, Govan Mbeki and Walter Sisulu from receiving the death sentence and going to the gallows during the Rivonia treason trial.”
