The fire occurred on Saturday shortly before 1pm. There are no reported fatalities or injuries, says City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson Theo Layne.
He added that “12 wood and iron structures and three formal dwellings were destroyed by the fire on Saturday. The cause of the fire is undetermined at this stage” .
One resident, affectionately known as Auntie Beena, was celebrating her 50th birthday when her home was destroyed.
Vrygrond Community Development Forum chairperson, Mike Khumalo, adds: “The community feels sad that this happened because this could have been avoided, had the City given the land back to avoid overcrowding.”
NGO Leading Hope assisted the residents.
