A group of 200 grannies from Manenberg and Heideveld received a surprise visit from a generous family who handed out care packs and food to help them celebrate Women’s Day under lockdown.
For the past three years, the Pelston family in Heideveld hosts a lunch for elderly women who live on their own or who are destitute to spread some cheer, but this year their plans were hamstrung due to the lockdown.
But Jenna Pelston says not even the lockdown could stop them and so they partnered with Manenberg Helping Hands.
“We gathered all the goodies to make up the care packs which had spray, sanitiser and a mask inside,” she says.
“Then we gave them some treats like samoosas and cakes and bottles of water on Women’s Day.
“This was our way of honouring the elderly women in our communities.
“Many of them live on their own and because we couldn’t have the lunch but we still wanted to make sure we did something for them.
“The women in Heideveld and Manenberg were so grateful and some of them even cried because they don’t have much.”
Jenna says they also reached out to younger women in Manenberg and handed out 50 packs of sanitary towels to assist young women during menstruation.
“Helping Hands helped us distribute in Manenberg and each pack was handed to the women at their doors in line with the regulations.
“We also gave 50 packs of sanitary towels to younger women to assist them.”
