The Artscape Theatre was an array of colour, glitz and glam for the second annual Absolutely Fabulous Drag Show (AbFab) at the weekend.
The drag community came out in full support, along with hundreds of others, to the two sold-out shows which took place on Saturday.
The Cape Spy attended the matinee show and also witnessed the legendary Terry Fortune’s last stage performance.
MC Odidiva announced the star’s swansong and said he was one of the first drag queens to make waves on the national stage, setting the scene for dozens to follow.
“Terry paved the way for drag queens in Cape Town and made us feel comfortable in our skin. We are honoured to have him join the show as a special guest,” said Odidiva.
The cast of drag queens, inclu- ding Manila Von Teez, Vida Fantabisha, Jayda Kay, Kat Gilardi, Angel Lalamor and Odidiva, as well as Gavin Roman (who isn’t a drag queen, but dressed up for the occasion as part of the act), gave the audience a show of note.
Each drag queen had an audio visual presentation, speaking about their coming out moment to their families, saying they hope it can encourage others to stand up for themselves.
The audience was wowed when the queens then came out on stage in their full drag regalia.
Dancers from Jazzart added spice to the performances as backup dancers.
PJ Smith treated his niece Aleah Jacobs to the show as a gift for her 16th birthday.
“Aleah enjoys drag performances and this one was not to be missed. It’s even more special because it’s her birthday,” said PJ.
