A Mitchells Plain drug counselling centre has come under attack by druggies who have burgled the facility twice in two weeks.
In the most recent incident at Ethel’s Place Youth Care Centre in Eastridge, the burglar bars were removed but the skurke fled when security guards arrived.
Director Ashley Potts says they were shocked to learn that an addict who broke in at the centre two weeks ago had returned to see what else he could steal.
“Two weeks ago we found that cameras which were donated were stolen and we reported it to police,” says Potts.
“I found out that it had been sold to a drug merchant in Eastridge and went there and got the cameras back.
“Two of the cameras were damaged but the merchant told me he paid the guy who came to sell it R150 for each camera. They are worth between R400 and R500 each.”
Potts says the mert identified the druggie and this was reported to police, however, no arrest was made.
“On Monday between 3am and 4am, the same suspect came back and broke the burglar bar but he was disturbed by a security company and did not get away with anything,” adds Potts.
Police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel André Traut, says an investigation is under way and no arrests have been made yet.
Potts says the centre started providing drug counselling in 2012.
“It is sad to see a facility that is for addicts that is there to help them being destroyed by them. We are trying to erect a fence but the cheapest quote we got is R28 000 and we do not have the funds.”
