In a choice between Godzilla vs Kong and the box office, who'd you bet on as the winner? Full marks if you said the box office.
The fliek pocketed a pandemic-era box office record upon its release at the weekend.
It earned $32 million (R466m) over the weekend and $48.5m (R706.5m) in its first five days of release.
The box office takings edged Wonder Woman 1984 to second place following its biggest three-day start with $16.7m (R243m), followed by Tom and Jerry with $14m (R204m).
Movie consultant David A. Gross said, given that 50% of movie theatres in the US have reopened, "the weekend is a clear and positive indication that moviegoing has inherent strengths that aren’t going away”.
The epic fliek in the Monsterverse arena pits Godzilla and King Kong - the two scariest icons in movie history - against each other, with puny humans trapped in the middle.
Alexander Skarsgård and Millie Bobby Brown are in the leading roles, with Hakeem Kae-Kazim and Rebecca Hall also starring.
Other new releases include The Unholy, action thriller Nobody and the Disney animation adventure Raya and the Last Dragon.
