Laughter really is the best medicine. Music also does wonders.
And some of Cape Town’s best comedians and musicians are putting on a show to raise funds for Hannah’s Place of Safety in Mitchells Plain.
Millenium Fundraising is hosting the fundraiser virtual concert called Lyrics and Laughter - the Halftime Show, which will be hosted by funny man Dalin Oliver and Rodney Brown this weekend.
The all-star line-up includes comedian Wayne McKay and singers Jarrad Ricketts, Nur Abrahams, Riyaan Cornelius and Salome.
Hannah’s Place of Safety is a temporary home for abandoned and abused babies under six months old.
Rodney of Hannah’s Place of Safety says it’s tough to survive as an NGO and the pandemic has added extra pressure.
“As an NGO, Covid has been tough and because we were not really deemed disaster relief recipients, there was no assistance from the government,” he says.
“As usual, we were called upon to assist in emergencies and rely on requests from members of our community.
“It is with this in mind that Millennium Fundraising approached the organisation with the aim of helping with much-needed funding, which we welcomed.”
Rodney urges people to support the event by purchasing tickets: “Our social media page has 24 000 followers, if each one can buy a ticket, we’d be able to make a huge impact in positive change in our communities.”
Director of Millennium Fundraising, Luke Mackie, told the Daily Voice: “As an initiative, one of our core values is to see treasure where others see trouble.
“That’s why we will always seek out communities, organisations and individuals who have traditionally been neglected because our society has seen them as ‘trouble’... think of some of our communities that suffer from gang violence, crime and drug abuse, no one really sees those people or communities as opportunities.
“By caring for the unloved, unwanted and unprotected children, an organisation like Hannah’s Place of Safety is the epitome of seeing treasure where others see trouble.
“That’s why we are inspired to be co-creating better futures with them and we know that every cent that they manage to raise will take one child closer to being the person they were made to be.”
The show is on 31 October at 7pm and tickets can be purchased for R95 via Quicket, where a link will also be provided for streaming.
The event will be staged at 44 on Long, Cape Town, and those tickets are R150.
