Despite the gloom of another two weeks of lockdown Level 4, saxophonist Donvino Prins is aiming to bring some cheer to fans this month with a rerun of his online show, Christmas Eve In July.
The father of three says times are tough for the music industry and the sudden halt in gigs two weeks ago has left him in a tight spot financially.
On Sunday, President Cyril Ramaphosa extended Level 4 by another two weeks as the country is battling a third wave of Covid-19.
“We all know that it’s been an even harder hit on the music industry, and we are barely scraping by,” Donvino says.
“How do we as musicians survive this time? There aren't any funds from the government to help us survive.
“Though most of us have tried other ventures for income, the reality is that the entertainment industry is suffering the most in SA, there are no gigs or corporate gigs happening and we are forced to take drastic measures to survive.”
Don, from Elsies River, produced the Christmas Eve in July show during the heart of lockdown last year and is now appealing to his fans to support him by buying a ticket.
He says the show will give viewers a lekker festive feeling, even if just for an hour.
The show is called Christmas Eve in July because it’s happening on 24 July, just like last year, and there will even be a Christmas tree and decorations to get you in the gees.
“We can all do with a little escape into that festive feeling, with Christmas songs, old traditional carols and decor,” says Don.
“When watching this show, you are bound to be swept away to that feeling of happier times with friends and family over the holidays, for most, the Christmas of 2019 would have been the last real family get together before Covid had hit us in 2020.”
The show features special guests Amy Jones, Jonathan Rubain, Spencer Kennedy, David J, Daylin Sass and Craig Jordaan.
Tickets are available on Quicket for R85 and the show starts at 8pm.
