Condolences have been pouring in for a popular Mitchells Plain ward councillor who died yesterday after losing a battle with cancer.
DA Western Cape leader Bonginkosi Madikizela described Tafelsig Ward 82 councillor Sheval Arendse, 57, as a servant of the people, saying he has faithfully served his community for just over a decade.
Madikizela said Arendse was “one of the hardest working” ward councillors he has ever met: “I’ve known Sheval for 13 years and his jovial spirit, even under the most stressful situations, will be fondly remembered.
“He was a very dedicated member of the DA and a servant of his people.
“The DA extends its deepest condolences to the friends, family and community of Councillor Arendse.”
On Wednesday, Arendse’s wife, Pam, would only confirm her husband’s passing, saying she was too hartseer to speak.
Ashley Potts, deputy chairperson of the Mitchell’s Plain Community Policing Forum, said Arendse was a rock: “We have worked closely with him on several projects, especially in the Tafelsig suburb.
“He was a true community activist and not just a ward councillor and always loved doing good for the community.
“He will be sorely missed but forever be remembered for his big heart.”
Rozario Brown, who manages the DStv Mitchell’s Plain Festival, says Arendse always went the extra mile for people: “Personally, I’ve lost one of my most trusted and loyal supporters, a confidante, a great motivator and a true friend.
“You fought a good fight and were dignified till the end,” he added.
Mayor Dan Plato has also extended his condolences saying he was “saddened” by the news.
