Matriculants are stressing over their final exams, but Idols SA Season 14 winner Yanga Sobetwa isn’t among them.
Yanga, 18, from Delft, told the Daily Voice plans to finish her matric in 2020 are on the back burner from pressure to complete her album, “Promised Land”.
“I still have time to complete it, I have worked hard and completed assignments for the start of 2019 but due to the workload and demands, I had to postpone this,” says Yanga, who wished matriculants well on social media.
She had “missed a lot of classes, was travelling a lot”, and said “it was a very difficult decision ... for me I felt like I failed”.

Her manager, Kim Coppen, said they’d done their best to work around Yanga’s school schedule and turned down gigs around her exam time, adding: “Yanga is a very clear and calculated young woman when it comes to decisions. She is not impulsive. So when she approached us with the plan to space out the exams over two years, we were proud of her for not just ‘dropping out’ but having a clear and concise plan to balance her career and education simultaneously.”
Paxton Fielies, 19, from Bishop Lavis who won season 13, also plans to finish her matric.

“I was way too busy coming out of the competition, I was too busy to even think about doing my matric. Last year I tried doing classes mid-year, had a tutor, a private night school thing, but it didn’t work out because I would miss classes for Idols things.
“I had big opportunities coming my way and I couldn’t say no.”
She says she’ll “try her best to do a few subjects next year”.
