Time is running out for this 13-year-old boy to reach his dream of competing at an international soccer tournament in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
It was curiosity, dedication and a love of the game that earned Liam Peters a spot in the KL Invitational Cup, taking place between 29 November and 13 December 2019.
Liam from Athlone is in Grade 8 at Belgravia High School and has managed to raise R19 000 so far.
Money for the trip which includes transport, accommodation, airfare, excursions, his gear and playing kit total R31 500.
Liam says he was chosen to compete earlier this year and is praying very hard that he gets all the funds he needs: “I still need R12 000 to play soccer overseas.
“There were trials held at the school. I asked if I could join and take part and the coach allowed me. I decided, let me give it a try and I succeeded.
“I play striker and I was chosen from between 30 and 40 kids,” he says proudly.

He is part of the Metro Education District players and adds: “I am very excited to take part and to travel also.”
His single mom, Anita Peters, 50, says they are now looking for a sponsor.
“I am very proud of my son and I am very excited for him. I am a single mom and I do home-based care looking after the frail.

“We raised funds by doing a high tea and even selling boerewors and chicken burgers from home and having a karaoke.”
