South Africa’s top B-boys and B-girls will go toe to toe for the title of Red Bull BC One breakdancing champion, with the winner getting the opportunity to represent SA in Poland in November.
The breakdancing competition returns to Cape Town with the national finals on Sunday, 22 March, at the District in Harrington Street in the CBD.
Twenty of South Africa’s most influential dancers will do battle.
The 10 B-boys include B-Boy Benny, B-Boy The Curse, B-Boy Toufeeq, B-Boy Meaty, B-Boy Shorty Blitz, B-Boy Charlton, B-Boy Kayzo, B-Boy Rhythm, B-Boy
LyanKing and B-Boy Kashief.
The girls’ section is due to be announced this week.
The reigning champ, Alfred Benjamin Burgess, aka B-boy Benny, competed in India last year, where he represented South Africa in the RB BC One World Finals.

The 32-year-old dancer says: “It was great to meet the new generation of breakers from around the world in India last year.
“The scene has evolved and I’m incredibly excited to see the new local B-boys and B-girls from South Africa compete in this year’s competition.”
Red Bull BC One’s Michael Pocock says this competition is one of a few that has a female section.
“Usually breakdancing competitions are male-dominated and don’t recognise the females also being present, but Red Bull BC One is dedicated to empowering and giving wings to female breakers in South Africa to showcase their moves on the global stage,” he says.
The Red Bull BC One weekend not only features the national final, but also a full-day workshop which is free for all breaking enthusiasts to attend at The Quay at the Waterfront on Saturday, 21 March.
The Red Bull BC One All Star team, comprising B-Boy The Curse, B-Boy Benny, B-Boy Toufeeq, B-Boy Shorty Blitz and B-Boy Meaty, will be at The Quay between 11am and 5pm, treating fans to a breakdance workshop and showcasing their skills.
If you’re keen to show off your kwaai breakdance moves, then stiek uit at the Waterfront.
Breakers will also be given the opportunity to make the Last Chance Qualifiers ahead of the national final, where six B-boys and two B-girls will be chosen to compete at the District the very next day.
