The Voice SA Blind Auditions are on a roll and our Cape Town talents are topping the judges’ lists again with five contestants already through to the next round after only three episodes.
And although she didn’t make it past the blind auditions, a Mitchells Plain granny made history when she became the eldest person to ever make it through to the TV stages.
Stephne Rose, 64, says she took the bold step of entering the singing competition “to better the lives of my three grandchildren who are in my care”.
The pensioner thrilled everyone with her energetic performance of the Tom Jones classic It’s Not Unusual, but sadly, not one coach turned for her.
Afterwards, judge, Lira, gave her a big hug and explained that there’s a lot going through a coach’s head when they sit in their big red chair listening to the faceless voices.
“But I want to tell you, you were exceptional,” Lira told a disappointed Stephne.
THROUGH: Tasché Burger, 18, from Brackenfell
To ease the pain of the ouma’s loss, Lira made the night a hit when she requested a mic to do an impromptu duet encore performance with the gutsy granny.
Spokesperson Nyagunda Ngwenya says Ouma Rose is the eldest contestant ever on The Voice SA.
“We haven’t had anyone older than her on the blind audition round, she is a bold granny who came with a mission. Age is just a number; look at Grandma Rose.”
Ending the episode on a high note was 18-year-old Tasché Burger from Brackenfell, who sang the Koos Kombuis classic Lisa Se Klavier.
Judges Francois van Coke, Lira, and Riky Rick turned for her almost immediately.
Tasché said she really wanted to be on #TeamRiana, but instead went with #TeamVan Coke.
“I originally wanted to choose Riana Nel, but after hearing Francois van Coke’s pitch I felt in my heart that he would be my best choice as coach for The Voice SA,” she said.
COACHES: Riky Rick, Lira, Riana Nel and Francois van Coke
The teen took a gap year to focus on The Voice SA and currently works as a waitress.
“I felt that I just have to do my best and whatever happens will happen. The support of everyone, including the contestants, is amazing. We work very hard.”
Tasche now joins fellow Capetonians Krista Jonas, Mo George, Keanu Harker and Petro de Villiers.
The Voice South Africa airs on M-Net 101 every Sunday at 5.30 pm and is repeated on VUZU, Channel 116, on Mondays at 10 pm.
